4 Major Trends Shaping Social Business in 2013 and Beyond! #ibmconnect #ibmsocialbiz #socbiz
Yesterday we had a fascinating panel at IBM Connect in Orlando on the 4 trends shaping Social Business in 2013. The discussion was led by Mark Fidelman @markfidelman and included Beverly Macy @BeverlyMacy and myself.
Here's a quick summary in case you weren't there!
- Beyond Marketing. The true social business is so far beyond marketing and is inclusive of every process in their business. In the Beyond Marketing area, we are seeing SociaL go to work in Sales, Water, Patents, Compliance, Legal, Talent Management, Supply Chain and more. It is time for Marketing to teach the rest of the org and for IT to stand up to the biz table with the focus on Social ! Examples include: City of Dubuque, Lowe's, David Jones, and more!
- Social + Analytics + Mobile + Cloud and I added the +Physical world. This 5 way is the way to competitive advantage. Mobile is in the smarter workforce. IDC said that 1.3fB people leverage their mobile devide as their #1 way to Collaborate! 68% use mobile as their primary way of social networking!
Examples include Retailers bridging virtual and real world with magic hangers. Check this out!
3. Social Business Comprehensive approach - technology + Adoption Plan. 57% of social businesses fail because they ignore Adoption. I am doing a whole series on the top 10 adoption best practices. One Social business coffee break a week on Mondays!!! Please join our series!
4. Social Business education and plan - it is critical that you address all types at your company: Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants and Non Digital. Education in fun ways is required. The way people learn is changing to gamification and the what of people must learn is different. From what you know to 'how do you find" what you need to know!!!

Social Business Example: The BIC card! #ibmconnect #ibm #ibmsocialbiz #socbiz
After 9/11 when the planes slammed into the NYC World trade Towers, Fire Chief Jack Murphy thought that there had to be a better way for responders to access critical building data to better plan their response operations. Jack invented the Building Information Card (BIC) for NYC on 9/11. The BIC became "Local Law 26" in New York City; whereby every NYC skyscraper and tall building required a building information card (flash card) to be maintained in the lobby to serve as a responder’s "Flash Card" to enable a responder to quickly understand a building's lay out and critical information. Fast forward to 2011. Jack approached the IBM social Business Team to automate the paper building information card into a mobile web application.
In the past 60 days, over 40+ building owners and the Jersey City Fire Chief have deployed their building data on eBIC Social mobile application. . "They are transforming emergency response operations through social business."

Social Business Tip of the Day: What type of content works? #ibmconnect #ibmsocialbiz #socbiz
I think that this quote says it all.
Your content needs to be unique but valueable. If you write about what everyone else writes about, you won't have fans. Your content needs to be first in the market or new. And it needs to be great value to clients.

Social Business Tip: The Throughline #socbiz #ibmsocialbiz #ibm #socbiz #ibmconnect
In Social Business, brand and consistency matter. In fact, I am here at Lowe's listening to @VictoriaLabalme talk about who you really are. Interesting.
Pause. Yes right now. After you are gone, what is the essence of what you want to be known for? That always effects behavior. I think this is really important for a company and each of us as people to think through before we post or pull together any social strategy.
A Through Line is an invisible thread that binds your story together in writing screen plays or books. It is the essential component of story structure
What's your through line in your social identity? How about for your company?
Advice:
- Determine your through line. We call this your brand value as well.
- Use the through line! Link all your blogs posts, tweets, speeches, emails
- First to final. Think about your first moment of interact -- and final moment. Then focus on how you take people from the first moment to the final moment. Great final moments in a great movie are always thought through!
- How did that make them feel? Social should be thought of with "Know Do Feel" --> Know is about the facts, the do is your actions, and feel is how you made them feel. No one really remembers what you said, but they remember how you made them feel I know a lot of posts are about know or do. But how often do we focus on the "Feel"?
I'd really like to know what you think of this approach.
