Empowering the consumer: Two Spanish startups shine in Madrid!

When was the last time you got your utility or energy bill and were pleasantly surprised? If you're like me, you dread even opening the bill -- especially in the winter in NY!!!!

Now, imagine getting that same bill and knowing what to expect, no ugly surprises. This is what Green momit, winner of SmartCamp Madrid, offers in their solution!

Green momit can enable significant energy savings in your home. Their solution learns from user behavior, comparing and improving the use of energy control systems, and adapting the devices to the customer's habits. So, not only can it learn from your energy usage habits, but it can also save you money on your energy bill!

How do they do this? Their solution uses Big Data and Analytics to crunch the math for predictable outcomes and actionable plans. They also use Cloud to deliver and securely store all this data. They've got the key ingredients for success!

Already, they have thousands of users and are developing agreements with utilities and other industries to provide this great service! Congratulations to Green momit on their SmartCamp victory! Follow them on Twitter @greenmomit.

The People's Choice Award winner, Weplan, has a mobile solution aimed at informing consumers about mobile phone plans that best fit their needs. Their free mobile app analyzes phone calls, data, and text expenditures directly from your smartphone.

Managing all this information provides Weplan with a complete picture of your telecommunications needs, as well as providing telcos with business intelligence that will allow them to better understand both their customers and their competitors.

Weplan is hoping to be in 30 countries in Europe and Latin America before year end. I'd say they're on the right track to educate consumers and industry, alike! Congratulations to Weplan! Follow them on Twitter @weplanapp.

Digital tip of the week – How to change your Twitter handle

Digital tip of the week  – How to change your Twitter handle

Yes, you created your Twitter handle a few years ago, without knowing so well what you were doing. And now you want to change it to a more professional looking name. You can do it easily by going to Settings and then “Username.” If your new name is available, you can change it, and instantly you will be @NewName, without losing a single follower.

All your Twitter posts, both new and old, will be rebranded with the new name. But any tweet or retweet you were mentioned in will still be under your old name, and will no longer be linked to your account, so think twice before you change your handle, because there is no step back once you do that.

My Top 10 "Facts" of Big Data and Analytics from IBMInsight Today!

There was an exciting start to IBM's Insight conference in Las Vegas starting first with our Outstanding Partners !!!   And did you know that this is the LARGEST Big Data conference in the world!

As Bob Picciano said "Data is the WHAT; Cloud is the HOW, and Engagement is the WHY"

Here's are just some of the exciting Facts that we've learned on the first day!

  1. 71% of companies planning to increase budgets for analytic systems and 60% of leading companies – compared to just 29% of lagging organizations – are increasing big data and analytics investment by double digits over the next two years.
  2. Most companies estimate they're analyzing a mere 12% of the data they have, according to a recent study by Forrester Research. Is this good or bad?   Are they missing out on data-driven insights hidden inside the 88% of data they're ignoring?
  3. >91% of big data deployments are planned to augment existing data warehouse not replace them
  4. From IBM's Business Tech Trend Study, nearly 70% of leading companies say analytics are integral to how their organizations make decisions, compared to fewer than 20% of lagging organizations
  5. 89% of leading companies have mature big data and analytics capabilities – 2x more than lagging companies.
  6. 74% of leading companies have most of the big data and analytics skills they need – 2 times more than lagging companies
  7. 33% of leading companies have an enterprise-wide analytics strategy – nearly 7 times more than lagging companies
  8. More than 80% of leading companies plan to increase use of social and mobile analytics over the next two years
  9. 80% of all data is geo-spatially managed in some way --Robin Jones
  10. A medical record is worth twice as much as a credit card on the black market.

And my 2 favorite quotes of the day.  "Complacency is the early stage of irrelevance!" and "Innovation is key. Its engine sits on two pillars: Culture and Team".

Digital tip of the week – How to write a perfect LinkedIn summary

The summary section on your LinkedIn profile is your presentation letter to the world and the way you can encourage people to read on. Simplicity is key to have a good summary that will reflect and summarize the rest of your profile. Here are some recommendations:

  • It should be detailed, but concise. But try to use the 2,000 characters available leveraging key words and phrases related to the role and the business.
  • Be organized: try to not have your summary look too cluttered, instead break it up with Subheads and make it easy to read.
  • Include your contact information. Make it easy for people to find you.
